PHYSICAL AI

Intelligence that has to work in the real world.

Physical AI connects perception, spatial understanding, physical reasoning, and action so machines can operate within the constraints of real environments.

What physical AI means

Physical AI describes intelligent systems whose decisions are grounded in bodies, objects, space, time, and physical consequences. A useful system must do more than recognize a scene: it must represent what is present, how things relate, what is changing, and which actions remain possible.

Language can describe a task, but a robot also needs current evidence from its environment and its own body. That evidence may include position, distance, motion, force, contact, joint state, and the reliability or freshness of each observation.

Why physical reasoning matters

A machine acting in the world needs to anticipate outcomes under physical constraints. An object may be visible but unreachable; a route may exist but violate a safety boundary; a grasp may be geometrically plausible but unstable under load.

World reasoning models organize these relationships over time so planning can use more than an isolated sensor frame. They provide a working representation that can be updated after every action.

  • Spatial representations of objects, surfaces, free space, and relationships
  • Temporal models of motion, change, and task progress
  • Embodiment data covering joints, limits, sensors, and available actions
  • Uncertainty and freshness signals that prevent missing evidence from becoming false certainty

Generalization across bodies and environments

General-purpose robot intelligence requires careful separation between concepts that can transfer and mechanisms that remain body-specific. Task intent and high-level physical relationships may be shared, while low-level control must respect the kinematics, actuators, sensors, and safety systems of each machine.

Ontos treats generalization as an evaluation problem rather than a finished claim. New bodies, tasks, environments, and failure conditions require held-out testing and physical validation.

The Ontos approach

Ontos develops a connected set of research and engineering systems: world reasoning for physical environments, P37 Neuro for cross-embodiment policies, Sense for explainable current-capability context, Verify for task evidence, and UMP for bounded machine communication.

These projects are at different stages of research and validation. None replaces native robot controllers, site safety engineering, or hardware qualification.

DIRECT ANSWERS

Common questions

What is physical AI?

Physical AI is intelligence grounded in bodies, environments, and the consequences of action. It combines perception, spatial and temporal reasoning, machine state, and control.

How do world models help robots?

A world model gives a robot a structured representation of its environment so it can track relationships and change, compare possible actions, and update its understanding after acting.

How is a world model different from a language model?

A language model represents patterns in language. A robotics world model represents physical state, relationships, dynamics, and expected outcomes. The two can work together, but they solve different parts of the problem.

Has Ontos solved general-purpose physical intelligence?

No. Ontos is building and validating components for physical intelligence. Cross-embodiment capability, long-horizon recovery, and broad physical deployment remain active research and qualification work.
