World Reasoning Models for Robotics: How Machines Represent Physical Environments
A world reasoning model maintains a structured account of a physical environment: its entities, spatial relationships, changes over time, and plausible outcomes of action.
Capture partial sensor and machine-state evidence.
Track entities, geometry, relationships, time, and uncertainty.
Compare possible actions with constraints and expected outcomes.
Measure the result and update the model when reality differs.
From observations to a world model
Sensors produce partial observations, not a complete world. A robotics system has to associate observations with objects and places, track them through time, and retain the relationships that matter for action.
The representation may combine geometry, semantic identity, motion, contact, machine state, and uncertainty. Its purpose is not to create a perfect replica of reality, but to maintain enough grounded structure for the next decision.
Spatial and temporal reasoning
Spatial reasoning covers where objects are, how they are oriented, which regions are traversable, and how bodies can interact. Temporal reasoning covers what changed, which event caused a change, and how the current state relates to task progress.
A reasoning system can use this state to compare candidate actions against constraints and expected consequences. Predictions must remain revisable when new evidence arrives.
Planning with physical relationships
Robot planning becomes more reliable when goals can be expressed against explicit relationships: an object is inside a region, a surface supports a payload, a path remains clear, or a machine is currently capable of an operation.
Ontos is exploring how this structured context connects perception, policy systems, machine communication, and verification without replacing deterministic control and safety boundaries.
Evaluation and limitations
World-model evaluation should test state accuracy, temporal consistency, prediction under intervention, recovery after an incorrect belief, and transfer to unseen environments. A convincing demonstration is not the same as broad qualification.
Ontos does not currently publish a benchmark claiming general world understanding. Public technical results will be added only with reproducible conditions, artifacts, and clear limitations.
Common questions
What is a world reasoning model?
It is a structured, updateable representation of a physical environment that supports reasoning about relationships, change, and likely outcomes.
Why do robots need world models?
Robots need continuity beyond a single sensor frame. A world model helps retain task-relevant state, compare actions, notice change, and revise plans when reality differs from an expectation.
Does a world model control a robot?
Not by itself. It can inform planning or policy decisions, while native controllers and deterministic safety systems remain responsible for bounded physical execution.
